Seeking Technical Suggestions

Howdy yall,

Wouldn't mind some help figuring out why my characters have such a hard time auto-following one another throughout Norrath; both populated and underpopulated regions. My computer has two 980ti graphics cards, 16 GB of ram and I use fiber optics 100 MB for my internet. I have tried messing around with the options and have tried capping the frame rate, uncapping, lowering qualities, but I can't seem to find the "thing" that could be causing me issues. I do have an SSD, but I currently have the EQ emu on another hard drive i use for storage; so something for myself to test later. I wouldn't mind any tips or suggestions to run my EQ game more smoothly among my six box characters.

Thanks,

Burdoc

Are you using mq2? It's worth the download just for a better /follow hehe. Apart from that, capping the background framerate should help (I assume you're using the RoF2 client?). If you're only using a single monitor and alt-tabbing, try putting it on whatever the lowest setting is since it shouldn't need more if you can't see it. Drop your clipping plane as low as you can stand it on the alts too (maybe on the main too, depending on performance). Also, a trick I used to use all the time on live is having the alts (and sometimes my main in raids heh) just look straight at the ground. Apart from those, just minimize all the graphics settings you can, maybe even the resolution of the alts, depending on how you play.

As a final thought, not sure if you've played eq before and had follow working well and the problem is new, so sorry if this is dumb advice, but there's something to be said for learning to have a "follow-friendly" playstyle. I multiboxed in eq pretty much since launch, and after a while you just get used to playing in a way that doesn't break auto-follow as much. Things like swinging wide on every turn so your alt skates around without getting stuck, periodic pauses for the bot to catch up, etc, or just hitting auto-run on everyone and alt-tabbing to course correct lol (made ww more interesting on live lol).

I appreciate it Control. Not too keen on using mq2, but may have to look into it at some point. I think it will be a matter of messing with the graphic options. Really enjoy playing at full graphics and its a bit ridiculous with the power my computer has that it wouldn't be able to keep up with EQ even while six boxing lol.

Some side observations I have noticed when playing via alt-tabbing between characters. Characters will die automatically when falling if I am not on the character (alt-tabbed) and they auto-run off a large enough cliff. Characters who are faster like the bard, can be outpaced because they are loading the world slower compared to the character I am viewing.

It's this loading part that I feel is causing the issue. I have messed around with frame-rate capping when in the background, but nothing so far.

I should clarify saying that these tests have been done while six-boxxing and not at a lesser state.

hmm, couple of other thoughts, does your computer do any power-saving stuff like reducing the cpu usage for background processes? i know some notebooks used to cause issues with that. Try digging around in your power options and make sure that something isn't throttling performance somewhere. could maybe try setting the eq processes to high priority? using 'set affinity' to set each eq instance to its own core helps with some problems too

Wow! Wow, wow wow! That is all I can say! What a difference that set affinity made! I saw that all my EQgame.exe's were running on just Core 0 lol

What a difference that makes! Never had such great loading times or following before! This is also probably why Howling Stones has been a pain for me too!

Is there a way to make this a default setting or will I have to task manager ---> right-click EQgame.exe ---> set affinity each time?

Put set affinity to allow all 12 cores btw lol

Is there a laggy zone that you (or anyone) could recommend for me to test this new found POWAHHHHH?

I went to howling stones and it is overall working great, but health bars from both enemies, group members and self always show as 100% HP. Seems howling stones will always be a little odd for me.

glad that it helped! I don't know of any way to make windows remember the affinity settings. it might be possible to automate it with a script, but i've never checked into it. that's a pretty good idea though
